This is a long, maze-like stage featuring Skree. Fortunately, by using some tech and playing part of the level backwards, it's possible to skip almost the entire stage through an intended shortcut.
Optimal
- Swap to Checkers at the start (if needed). Begin by piggybacking, jumping and launching straight up - do not begin holding right until after the midair dropdash. After the second piggyback you can hold right and launch straight through the bee and frogs. If you begin the quad jump immediately, the cycles will line up perfectly to go right between everything.
- Be cautious during the dropdash at 0:03.8. Aim to begin the dropdash as soon as possible and get as much height as possible to the rope without colliding with the spikes above. Piggybacking here is possible too, and only slightly slower.
- Similarly, be very careful with the dropdash at 0:05. If you are too low, you may collide with the spikes, and if you dropdash immediately on top of them you can snap to them, taking damage. Fortunately there is a buddy bubble up ahead if anything goes wrong.
- Groundpounding to the small wooden platform and launching right sets you up perfectly to pass through the gap and have enough invincibility frames (I-frames) to reach the end of the spikes. If you take damage too far left, including on the upper spikes, your I-frames won't last long enough and you'll have to jump before rolling off the end of the spike platform. If you are fast enough, you can dropdash over the frog before it jumps, but if you don't make it in time you'll need to wait for the frog to move.
13 is good on this level, but 14 is fine too.
Backups
If you only have 1 buddy at the start of the level, going back to Honey-Buzz Boiler or Magmaw Well only loses about 2 seconds IGT. If you take damage after reaching the upper platform, you can also grab the checkpoint and go back for a bubble. Going back to Shrine of the Salamancer (or just continuing through the level) is fastest for RTA timing. These videos show some backups that can be faster than going back for a bubble depending on the situation.
Solo Checkers start
Instead of quad jumping to the higher platform, there is a hidden gap between the spikes leading to cannons that fire you upwards. You can climb the ropes as solo Checkers to the bubble, then perform the damage boost as usual.
- After the checkpoint, the frogs will be in a bad position. Briefly waiting for them to move is easiest.
- After grabbing the bubble, you can still dropdash through the gap before the frog jumps if you are fast enough.
- Marbles can use this route too, but it is considerably slower (and riskier) since Marbles can't dropdash out of the cannons or climb as fast. Going back for a bubble is best.
Checkers damage backup
If you lose Checkers after reaching the higher platform, Marbles can climb the ropes to the bubble. This may be slightly faster than taking the checkpoint and going back for a bubble depending on where you take damage.
- Be careful with the jump around the bee at 0:06.5. You must position yourself from the bottom of the rope.
